Call Master
Alert vessel’s crew by emergency alarm and announcement on PA system
Alert other vessels in vicinity; Broadcast Urgency or Distress message, as appropriate. Inform VTS or port authority, as appropriate
Account for and ensure the safety of the vessel’s crew. Report casualty if any
Ascertain vessel’s position
Post extra lookouts
Sound internal spaces and initiate structural damage survey if required
Assess vessel stability condition and calculate for potential risk eg. loss of buoyancy, overstress, excessive list, capsizing, cargo shifting etc.
Contact Class ERS for damage stability assessment and advise on Cargo / Ballast transfer
Monitor weather, sea conditions
Seek assistance to call ice breaker if the vessel is stuck in ice
Consider ballasting/deballasting to counter excessive trim or list
Manoeuvre as appropriate/stop engine
Refer to the relevant publications like Polar code etc.
Maintain log/records of event and decision
