Helm Orders and Actions
| Order | Meaning and Action Required |
|---|---|
| Midships | Rudder to be held in the fore and aft position. |
| Port/Starboard Five, Ten, Twenty | 5 degrees, 10 degrees, or 20 degrees port or starboard rudder to be held. |
| Hard Starboard/Port | Rudder to be held fully over starboard or port. |
| Ease to Five, Ten, Twenty | Reduce the amount of rudder to 5 degrees, 10 degrees, or 20 degrees and hold. |
| Steady or Steady as She Goes | Steer a course on the compass heading indicated at the time of the order. Helmsman is to call out the compass heading (in three digits) upon receiving the order. When the ship is steady on that heading, the helmsman is to call out “Steady on XXX” (course in three digits). |
| Nothing to the Port of XXX (Course) | Use appropriate rudder in either direction to keep the vessel on or to the starboard of a given course, but nothing to the port. |
