In addition to the general standing orders given below, Master is to issue separate standing orders to include ship specific information and other points that may not be covered in the general standing orders.

PARAMOUNT CLAUSE:

THE SAFETY OF THE SHIP AND ITS PERSONNEL IS ALWAYS TO BE THE PRIME CONSIDERATION, TAKING PRECEDENCE OVER ANY OTHER. NO CONSIDERATION OF PROGRAMME, CONVENIENCE OR PREVIOUS INSTRUCTIONS JUSTIFIES TAKING ANY RISK, WHICH MAY PLACE THE SHIP IN DANGER.

The Master is to make clear, in writing to the OOW in charge of the navigational watch that he shall notify the Master immediately if following: (Ref STCW A-VIII/2 part 3-1, No 40)

A good officer, when faced with any unusual circumstance, will apply COMMON SENSE AND THE GOOD PRACTICE OF SEAMANSHIP to the situation and act accordingly. If you find yourself thinking about calling the Master, then the time has clearly come to do so. All officers are to sign and date these orders.
